Teacher:
Good afternoon, students. I am glad to see you again. I hope everybody is ready to work. Let’s start our lesson. The theme of our lesson is «The Green Door» by O. Henry. Today we have video lesson, that’s why during our lesson we’ll watch and discuss the story “The Green Door”. Then you will try to answer the questions and to do assignments.
You will work in groups. You are divided into three groups.

T: As you know, the author of the story is O. Henry. He is an American short - story writer of the late 19th century. He is a representative of realism, who wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City.
And your home task was to prepare the presentation about the biography of O. Henry.
1st group: Early Life of O. Henry.
Teacher: Why O. Henry? His real name is William Sidney Porter and O. Henry is his pen name. While in prison, he began writing short stories and it is there that he took the pen - name O. Henry for his writings.

2nd group: Later Life of O. Henry.

3rd group: Works of O. Henry.
Teacher: O. Henry is the author of over 250 stories and is most famous for his use of surprise or 'twist' endings. The story "The Green Door“ has the twists and surprises in the ending.

1. PRE - STORY
a) Discussing the quotation.
“Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice” by William Jennings Bryan
b) Answer these questions.
• Do you like adventure?
• Do you like meeting people?
• Do you prefer to go out at night or during the day?

b) Vocabulary.
 poverty [ˈpɒvətɪ] - the state of being poor, or having no money;
 destiny [ˈdestɪnɪ] - something that is to happen or has happened to a particular person or thing;
 mysterious /mɪˈstɪəriəs/ - strange, unknown, or difficult to understand;
 to slip [slip] - to distribute; to give
 location /loʊˈkeɪʃən/ - a place or position;
 to convince /kənˈvɪns/ - to cause (someone) to believe that something is true;
 to faint /feɪnt/- suddenly become unconscious for a short time, usually falling down

Put new words where it is necessary. Read and translate the sentences.
1. The Negro … a card into Rudolf's hand
2. Rudolf compares the other pieces of paper with his, but nobody else seems to have received.. invitation to The Green Door.
3. The other pieces of paper all advertise... of a doctor's office.
4. She.. from hunger into Rudolf's arms.

2. In - Story
Teacher: Now we are going to watch the film “The Green Door” on the Active board. I divided the film into some episodes. You should watch and listen it very attentively. Then I will ask you some questions.

Episode 1.
1) What kind of man is Rudolf Steiner?
2) How the story to be continued?

Episode 2. (1. 47 minutes)
1) Who attracted Rudolf’s attention as he was walking along the street?
2) What was written on the card which Rudolf got and on the card which he picked up?
3) What would Rudolf do next?
4) What does the card “Green Door” mean?

Episode 3 (3. 28 minutes)
1. What would Rudolf do next?
2. Whom would he see behind the door?

Episode 4 (4. 12 minutes)
1. Why was the girl so pale and weak?
2. In what way would the young man help the girl?

Episode 5 (5. 22 minutes)
1) How did Rudolf explain to the girl his unexpected visit?
2) What was the real reason why Rudolf had got the card with the words “The Green Door”?
3) What is the main idea of the story?

3. Follow up
a) Put the sentences in the right order
1. On all of them were the name and the address of the dentist.
2. The Negro told Rudolf that the theatre agent had given him a dollar to hand out a few of his cards together with the dentist's.
3. The Negro slipped a card into Rudolf's hand.
4. A girl not yet twenty stood there.
5. He was always dreaming of adventures.

b) Put the words in correct order

Write a short story about a colored door. You can follow ideas from The Green Door. Perhaps your door will be blue or purple. It's your choice...
