Working with the text “Macbeth”
Aim:
1. Educational: to teach the pupils how to read and pronounce the new words and to improve pupils’ knowledge about Shakespeare’s play.
2. Developing: to develop their listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing habits.
3. Bringing - up: to distinguish bad from good, to be kind and do only good deeds.
Type of the lesson: Scientific - practical lesson.
Aids: tape, interactive board, CD, cards with new words and expressions, pictures, photo of Shakespeare, slides.
Methods: Question - answer, narrating, listening, discussion, ICT, individual, pair and group work.
Learning outcome: By the end of the lesson students will be able to use grammar; express their thoughts concerning this theme; differentiate bad from good; explain their point of view using proverbs; develop their listening, reading and critical, analytical thinking.`

Procedure of the lesson:
I. 1. Org. moment.
Greeting. Checking the attendance.
2. Brainstorming.
A) What do you know about Shakespeare?
B) What was the name of his theatre?
C) Who played the roles of girls at his time?
3. Looking at the picture and telling what we are going to read and listen.
Teacher: Today we are going to work with the story of Macbeth. The story on the tape has been simplified from the original to make it easier for students to understand. It is a play. From the picture, what kind of play do you think it is? What do you think it is about?
Students: P: I think it’s about war
P: To my mind it’s about violent people
P: A Fiction story
Teacher: Well, at the end of the lesson you’ll see and tell your opinions.

II. Mainpart. 1. Working with the new words and expressions and dividing them into parts of speech.
Haunt v. Escape v. Prophesy v.
Ghost n. murder v. witches n.
Prophecy n. Narrator n.
Expressions:
▪ To come true
▪ To make a strange prophecy.
▪ To do mad.
▪ To persuade somebody to do something.
Ss: Work on new words and expressions with dictionary and divide them into parts of speech, translate and write into copy books.
2. Pre reading task: Ss read the notes and understand the meaning...
Notes
Prophecy is the noun, prophesy is the verb. Note the difference in spelling and the pronunciation of the ending.
At the time of the play Scotland and England were independent countries.
Scotland had its own king.
Macbeth - many Scottish family names begin with: ‘Mac’. It means ‘son of…’
3. Reading the extract from the text.(Individual work)
“When shall we three meet again in thunder, lighting or in rain?”
These are the first lines of a play called Macbeth, which was written by William Shakespeare. The play takes play in Scotland. In the opening scenes two Scottish generals, Macbeth and Banquo, are on their way home after a battle when they meet three witches. The witches make a strong prophecy. They tell Macbeth that he will become king of Scotland. They also tell Banquo that he will not become king, but he will be the father of a king.

4. Questions to the extract.(Pair work)
Who do you think speaks the words from the play?
Who is the main character?
Who wrote it?
Where does the play take place?
What do the witches do?

5. Listening. You are going to listen to the story of Macbeth.

6. While listening they will find what characters do this actions concern to? ( Group work)
Look at these characters from the play.
King Duncan ----------- becomes king.
Malcolm ---------------- is killed.
Macbeth ---------------- Escapes
Lady Macbeth --------- haunts Macbeth.
Banquo ----------------- tells Macbeth to kill the king.
Fleance ----------------- comes to visit Macbeth
--------------------------- Goes mad and dies

Check the right answers.

7. Forms of expressing the text. (narrating, monologue)

8. Characters: Positive and negative. (Pair work)
Divide the characters into 2 columns and they explain their choice.
9. Put these events in the correct order. ( Group work)

B. The witches tell Macbeth he will be safe till the forest moves
C. Duncan visits Macbeth’s castle
D. Macbeth becomes king.
E. Malcolm’s army attacks Dunsinane.
F. Macbeth and Banquo meet the tree witches.
G. The witches prophesy that Macbeth will become king.
H. Malcolm becomes king.
I. Macbeth murders Duncan.
J. Macbeth goes back to find the three witches.
K. Lady Macbeth goes mad and dies

10. Listen again and check your order

Answer key
a. He wanted to make the witches’ prophecy come true. His wife persuaded him to do it.
b. The witches had prophesied that Banquo’s children would become king. Macbeth wanted to stop this happening.
c. The witches had said that he would be safe until Birnam Wood moved towards his castle. He didn’t believe that a wood could move.
d. Malcolm’s men held branches in front of them to hide themselves when they attacked the castle. From the castle it looked as if the forest was moving.

III. Conclusion.
1. Moral of the story. Choose the proverb and explain it.(Individual work)
1. It never rains but it pours.
2. Let sleeping dogs lie
3. Pride goes before a fall.
4. If you harm somebody, it turns back.
S1: Moral of the story is 4th proverbs: Macbeth wanted to make the witches’ prophecy come true. His wife persuaded him to do it. Lady Macbeth goes mad and dies. Macbeth is killed by Malcolm.
S2: Moral of the story is 3rd proverb: He didn’t believe that a wood could move. Malcolm’s men held branches in front of them to hide themselves when they attacked the castle. From the castle it looked as if the forest was moving.
S3: Moral of the story is 2nd proverb: He wanted to make the witches’ prophecy come true. His wife persuaded him to do it. He killed Banquo. Banquo’s son takes revenge.
Teacher: Thank you! And now can you tell me what kind of play you think is it.
Ss: It’s a tragedy…
2. Homework: Writing a story of Macbeth.
3. Assessment: Putting grades to all students, who were very active and made no mistakes «5», who made some mistakes but were active and tried to express own point of view «4».
4. Reflection: Ss write on reflection sheets their opinions: What was difficult? What have they learnt? Who helped?
