Lesson theme: Active voice and passive voice
Aim: Students learn when and how to use the passive voice.
Learning outcomes by the end of the lesson: Students will be able to form the passive voice.
Students will be able to differentiate between the active and passive voice.
Students will know when and how the passive voice is used.
Visual aids & equipment: Interactive board, copy books, strips of paper with active - voice sentences, pictures
Literature: English in mind 3
The strategies used: ICT, critical thinking, dialogues, matching
I Organizational moment
Greeting the class.
Create the classroom environment and divide the class into two groups.
ІІ Warm up Play the game “Jeopardy”.
III Evocation
Show the students a picture. Then ask them a question about the picture, which elicits an active - voice response. Write down the answer on the board, and tell them that there is another way to answer the question with the passive voice.
There are two sentences. What can you tell about these two sentences?
- Where is the sentence in Active Voice and Passive Voice?
- What tenses are used in these sentences?
IV Understanding Active vs. Passive Voice
Active voice is the voice used to indicate that the subject of the sentence is performing the action or causing the action. Passive voice is the voice used when the subject is the recipient of the action. Strong writing uses active voice. Passive voice should only be used in the following instances:
- When intentionally hiding the subject of the sentence. For example, a politician might say, "Mistakes were made."
- When intentionally truing to minimize the guilt of the subject. For example, a cheating husband might respond, "Adultery was committed by me."
- When passive voice better emphasizes the main point of the passage. For example, Children were harmed by unlicensed bus drivers.
V Work in pairs Give students cards and tell them to complete the sentences in the passive voice.
VI Race Game Divide the class into two teams. Once the game is over, look at a few sentences on the board to ensure that the class understands the passive voice.
VII Group work
Ex 1 p 40 ‘Where boys become crocodile men’
Ask students to read the text quickly and answer the questions.
VIII Reflection
Ask the students to do the following task: “How well do you know each other?” Take a guess and complete the sentences:
For your next birthday, you will be given…
At the weekend, you really enjoy…
For your next holiday, you want…
When you can, you avoid…
If you move away from this town, you will miss…
IX Feed back
“Three - minute pause”
Ask the students to write down their opinion about the lesson.
X Home assignment
Give the home task
XI Assessment
Evaluate the success or failure based on the in class exercises.
XII Conclusion Ask the following questions:
- What is the active voice?
- When is the passive voice used?
- Can you give any examples in the passive voice?
