1. The normal rule is to add – ed.

If the verb ends in – e. add - d.

2. If the verb has only one syllable+ one vowel+one consonant. double the consonant.
Stopped

3. If the verb ends in a consonant + - y, change the – y to – ied.

Form
The form of the Past Simple is the same for all persons.
Positive
I lived abroad for ten years.
He enjoyed being a student.
She played a lot of tennis when she was younger
Negative
The negative of the Past Simple is formed with didn’t
He didn't go to the office
Mary didn't attend the meeting last week.
We did not go to the supermarket.
Questions
The question in the Past Simple is formed with did.
We use did to make questions with the past tense:
When did you meet your wife?
Where did you go for your holidays?
Did she play tennis when she was younger?
Did you live abroad?
Short answer
Did you go to work yesterday?
Yes, I did.
Did it rain last night?
No, it didn’t.
You will often find the past simple used with time expressions such as these:
o Yesterday
o three weeks ago
o last year
o from March to June
o for a long time
o for 5 weeks
o in the 1980s
o in the last century
o in the past
